The Alabama Senate may soon consider a bill that would require public schools to display the Ten Commandments. If the Senate passes House Bill 178, those schools would have to post the Ten Commandments in common areas like entrances, hallways, and cafeterias—places where all students can see them.
The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Gidley, says this legislation is about returning to foundational Judeo-Christian values. The State House passed the bill last week.
To be clear, the bill does not require local school boards to cover the cost of these Ten Commandments displays. Instead, schools could use state funds or local donations to pay for them. Unsurprisingly, parents and grandparents are divided on whether the Ten Commandments belong in schools.
One parent told WAAY 31, “I feel like it’s a good idea depending on how other cultures feel. There can be cons and pros to it—it just depends on the individual and how they take it.”
A grandparent added, “I am totally against the idea. I believe religion has its place in the church or at home—separation of church and state.”
This isn’t the first time the Ten Commandments have stirred controversy in Alabama. In 2001, former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore was removed from office after refusing a court order to take down a Ten Commandments monument he had placed in the state judicial building’s rotunda.
A Senate committee must first review the bill before it goes to the full Senate for consideration.
