Haniyeh sends a message to Israel as resumption of peace talks start

Middle easterners are good at sending covert messages, the kind that say more than any amount of words. Yesterday, Haniyeh visited the Turkish ship, Mavi Marmara, whose activist passengers tried to take on the IDF and lost. "Your martyrs are our martyrs, your blood is our blood, your wounds are our wounds," Mr Haniyeh told the Turks, who support Palestinians and their cause to destroy Israel. Bolstered by Haniyeh's hubris to show his own Jihad propensity, Abbas has now announced if Israel doesn't kowtow to Palestinian demands, "hard measures" will be taken, but he wouldn't say what those measures are. Given Hamas' brand new brazenness about being a branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas calling for cancellation of the talks, and that Hamas and Fatah are so close to reconciliation, it doesn't take much imagination to figure out what those hard measures might be. A Hamas spokesmen said peace talks are doomed to failure and Abbas still says resumption of talks depends on Israel stopping settlement building. Israel responded by announcing new construction of 300 homes beyond the Green Line in Jerusalem.

US planning buffer zone on Syria's border

The US is raising the pressure on Bashar al-Assad with plans to set up a buffer zone along the Lebanese border as Nicolas Sarkozy of France called for al-Assad to step down. The announcements came as the Syrian consulate in Gaziantep near the Syria-Turkey border is being evacuated and a gas pipeline was blown up near the central town of Rastan that cut off supplies to two power plants. In the north, the opposition captured two Syrian military checkpoints. Analysts believe al-Assad only has weeks left as Syria's leader.
